Elaine’s persistence finally wore Mara down. She made an appointment with the psychiatrist, Dr. Townsend, finding it actually was helpful to talk to someone. She felt comfortable enough over time to discuss seeing Michael, although she was very careful not to tell him she believed Michael was real. Dr. Townsend was sympathetic, saying in her grief, her mind was persistent in trying to recreate Michael, but that believing these fantasies was dangerous. He tried to prescribe anti-depressants, but Mara politely refused.

He ran a finger down her cheek. “This is the reason I came back, to give you the child we never had time to create. I’ve done what I came back to do. It’s the one thing my mother can’t take away from you that’s also a part of me.”

Michael leaned over, kissing Mara on the forehead. “And now, Mara, I have to go.” Mara blinked. And he was gone.

“Wait...” Mara sat up, flicking on the light but the other side of the bed was empty. She ran her hands over the sheets, still feeling the warmth where Michael had been laying, his scent on the pillows. She reached out, pulling his pillow to her, curling around it as she began to cry.

Mara made an appointment with Dr. Saunders the following week. If what Michael said was true, she needed to know.

“Mara, it’s good to see you again.” Dr. Saunders motioned her to the chair across from his desk, the one she’d sat in the last time she’d been in this office, with Michael.

“I have your test results from last week.” Dr. Saunders flipped open a file, reading for a moment. He looked up at her.
